About Silk Sonic:
Silk Sonic introduced “Leave The Door Open” in March 2021 alongside an official music video directed by Mars and Florent Déchard, which won Best R&B Video and Best Editing at the 2021 MTV Music Video Awards. The track was followed by a hugely popular social media campaign, #LetSilkSonicThrive, which earned them a debut live performance at the GRAMMY® Awards (plus a powerful tribute to Little Richard) followed quickly by iconic live sets at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and the BET Awards.

“Leave The Door Open” became Silk Sonic’s first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending two non-consecutive weeks at #1 and 18 consecutive weeks in the top 10. In the meantime, their infectious jingle co-written and performed for SelvaRey Rum amassed widescale praise over the summer. The duo then coasted into their sophomore release of “Skate,” which saw them glide into a second top 10 hit on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as it debuted at #4 and began as the genre’s best-selling song of the week.

“Smokin Out The Window” arrived in November 2021 with Billboard noting how “Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars take it all the way back to the 1970s Soul Train era in the retro video. [It]finds them going through their choreo on an old school TV set while rocking wide lapel tuxedo jackets.” Following the vibey single, the duo released the critically acclaimed album, An Evening With Silk Sonic. Silk Sonic is officially GRAMMY nominated with their debut hit and 2021 summertime anthem, “Leave The Door Open,” earning four 2022 GRAMMY Awards nominations in Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song categories.

Catching pop radio fire with her latest infectious single, the female empowerment anthem “Pleasure is Mine,” independent pop singer/songwriter Alya pulled off a dynamic double coup the week of November 23.

In addition to tying Adele’s latest release “Oh My God” with Most Adds (12) on the Mainstream Top 40 Most Added section of the Billboard Pop Airplay/Mainstream Top 100 National Airplay chart, the multi-talented performer made history as the first Russian born artist ever to hit the chart.

Inspired by her native Slavic mythology, allegories and metaphors – including numerous references to rushing water, waves and rushing rivers – the sensual and sultry, subtly exotic and richly symphonic song was written by Alya and produced by Grammy, Emmy and Dove Award winning engineer/producer Bill Schnee, who has worked with everyone from Steely Dan and Chicago to Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston throughout his five decade career.

Released September 17, “Pleasure is Mine” is the follow-up single to Alya’s breakthrough single “American Beauty” (also produced by Schnee), which generated nearly 500,000 Spotify streams and whose dance remix by Dave Aude (Grammy winner for his remix of “Uptown Funk”) reached #16 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronica Club Songs chart in only two weeks.

“Though the imagery of ‘Pleasure is Mine’ is rooted in my Slavic culture, I am grateful that the song is connecting with people in so many unique ways,” Alya says. “During the pandemic when so many were isolated, people had the opportunity to be more introspective about who they are and what they want to do with their lives. At heart, it’s a song about understanding who you are and staying true to yourself. There are a lot of stereotypes about Russian women and I hope that the song serves to broaden people’s understanding a bit and explain femininity from our perspective, using lifegiving water imagery so many can relate to.

“The message of the song comes to life with music that also taps into my Russian heritage with the exotic and orchestral sounds,” she adds. “The title is all about female empowerment and the way the expression of femininity can lead to people feeling pleased with themselves and their innermost truths.”

The just released video for “Pleasure is Mine” features exotic dancers in a desert near the wreckage of a recently crashed airplane. The earthy yet sexy, eye-popping costumes were designed by fashion stylist Tara Swennen, whose clients have included Kristen Stewart, Matthew McConaughey and Allison Janney, in addition to campaigns with Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Target and Netflix. The clip received over 14,000 views the day it dropped.

On December 10, Alya will be releasing a beautiful acoustic version of “Pleasure is Mine,” which, the singer says, “will open up new, rich, tasteful and aristocratic dimensions of the song,” allowing listeners to connect with the message in a whole new, deeper way.

Connecting the theme of “Pleasure Is Mine” with her life journey as a global citizen, Alya created the Beautiful Journey series, now available on alyamichelson.org. It offers a mix of written, podcast, and video interviews that focus on the lessons that brave, beautiful, generous women have learned while building lives in a new homeland. Alya is currently working on the follow-up album to her 2019 debut collection Ten Years of Solitude, which will be fully devoted to her Slavic culture, as she continues to climb the pop charts.

The docu-series EARTH with John Holden airs Sunday, December 26th at 3:30 pm EST and Sunday, January 2nd, 2022, at 3:30 pm EST on Bloomberg TV; and on Sunday, December 26th at 10:00 am EST on BNN Bloomberg (Canada) Sunday, and January 2nd 2022, at 5:00 pm EST on Fox Business Network. EARTH with John Holden is also available on the streaming platforms Vimeo, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and YouTube.

In this episode, viewers find how Novipax packaging prevents food waste, Electrolux builds greener appliances, LKQ recycles end-of-life vehicles, the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol supports sustainable crops, and giant Wurth Group keeps ecology “all in the family.”

First, host John Holden travels to Grenada, Mississippi to discover how the company Novipax produces innovative packaging designed to prevent food waste. As our global population grows, billions of people go hungry while in richer countries, consumers waste a third of the food they buy. Novipax is working to create new kinds of packaging that extend the shelf lives of all kinds of food products, keeping them edible and delicious as long as possible. One new product is absorbent food pads that keep meats fresh longer by inhibiting bacterial growth.

Next, Andrea Ocampo travels to North Carolina to explore how Electrolux, one of the world’s leading global home appliance manufacturers, makes the household appliances we depend upon greener. Today’s consumers evaluate the eco-friendly aspects of appliances they buy, with good reason. Our homes can have long term impacts on the environment. Electrolux is designing washer/dryers that help make clothes last longer and use less water; and refrigerators that keep food fresher. The company even uses less packaging to ship their products. It’s all part of their company-wide goal to reduce CO2 emissions.

John visits a gigantic 21st century salvage yard in Casa Grande, Arizona. He finds out how LKQ Corporation, the world’s largest auto recycler, processes more than 800 thousand cars every year at their worldwide facilities. Recycled parts from these end-of-life vehicles include electronics, transmissions, tires, metals, headlamps – even usable oil. In all, LKQ’s recycling team scours vehicles for more than 130 parts that are resold rather than dumped into a landfill. They’re used for car repairs, or repurposed for new items such as playgrounds, steel parts, and roads. The result: less pollution and reduced global warming.

Next, John visits a cotton farm in Louisiana, to find out how today’s crops are saving water, land, soil, and energy – while using fewer chemicals than in past years. New sustainability methods mean crops can remain productive and sustainable for generations to come, while our drinking water runs clean. Bringing down the carbon footprint for an entire industry is a major initiative of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol. Its 500 members include retailers, brands, and agricultural interests, all working together to produce more eco-friendly cotton for the fabrics and fashions we love.

Finally, John travels to Kunzelsau, Germany to explore how family-owned Wurth Group maintains sound environmental practices throughout 400 companies in 80 countries, with a company-wide commitment to sustainability and circular economics. Wurth’s parent company expects to achieve climate neutrality by 2024 through expanding its electric vehicle fleet, using renewable energy, greener packing systems, and more. One example is Wurth’s 3D printing products, which allow manufacturers to streamline supply chains and distribution. Another is the company’s new industrial complex, constructed entirely of wood.

Throughout the series our host, six-time Emmy Award winner John Holden, takes viewers around the globe to showcase companies with inspiring, eco-friendly initiatives that enhance our lives through the latest technologies and innovations. With insightful interviews and amazing on-site discoveries, Holden highlights the ways businesses protect our environment, to fight global warming and create a better world for everyone.

Meghan teams up with Melissa McCarthy for birthday mentorship video

Britain’s Duchess Meghan celebrated her 40th birthday on Wednesday with a light-hearted video and an appeal for people to mentor women trying to get back into the work force.

Meghan, the wife of Prince Harry, teamed up with “Bridesmaids” actress Melissa McCarthy for the tongue-in-cheek video to launch her “40×40” initiative.

The two joke about marking her milestone birthday by holding a cast reunion of the duchess’s former TV series “Suits, getting matching tattoos or partying on yacht.

Meghan, however, announces she is asking 40 friends to mentor a woman for 40 minutes, and encourages others to do the same.

Meghan, formally known as the Duchess of Sussex, said in a message on the couple’s Archewell Foundation website that she sees mentorship as a way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength.

“For my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kickoff a global effort by contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women re-entering the workforce,” she said.

Meghan said millions of women around the world left or lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, and many shouldered the responsibility of child care, caring for relatives and home schooling.

Meghan has made women’s empowerment a key part of her platform before and after she and Harry quit the royal family and moved to California last year to live independently.

Last month she announced she had teamed up with Netflix to produce an animated family series about the adventures of a 12 -year old girl who is inspired by influential women from history.

Britain’s ITV says ‘no current plans’ for another ‘X Factor’ series

British broadcaster ITV said it has “no current plans” for another series of music talent show “The X Factor”.

The singing competition, created by British music mogul and television personality Simon Cowell, debuted on UK screens in 2004 and kick-started the careers of chart toppers such as Leona Lewis, One Direction and Little Mix.

Its last series aired in 2018 before going on hiatus.

“There are no current plans for the next series of The X Factor at this stage,” an ITV spokesperson said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

Once hugely popular, the UK show has seen ratings fall over the years.

Newspaper The Sun reported late on Wednesday Cowell was axing the series “for at least five years”.

The show, in which aspiring singers aim to win a recording contract and are mentored by celebrity judges, has been exported around the world and has had various spin-offs, including a celebrity version in 2019.

Singer Rihanna is officially a billionaire, Forbes says

Pop star Rihanna’s net worth is estimated at $1.7 billion, making her the richest woman musician in the world, but her music is not the primary source of her wealth, Forbes magazine said on Wednesday.

The Barbados-born singer, whose birth name is Robyn Fenty, derives an estimated $1.4 billion of her fortune from her 50% stake in the Fenty Beauty cosmetics line, Forbes reported.

The rest of Rihanna’s wealth comes from her share of the Savage x Fenty lingerie company and her income as a singer and actress, the magazine said.

Rihanna’s beauty company, of which LVMH owns the other half, is known for its broad range of 50 skin tones, including dark shades for women of color, which were rare when it launched in 2017. This made it a leader in inclusivity in the industry.

The singer of “Umbrella” and “Love the Way You Lie” ranks second behind Oprah as the richest female entertainer, Forbes said.

Meet a pint-size U.S. piano prodigy

Brigitte Xie reads music, can play Beethoven’s Sonatina in F Major and has won a spot to perform at Carnegie Hall. She is 4 years old.

Brigitte’s feet dangle above the ground when the petite girl sits on the piano bench, her hands moving gracefully across the keyboard.

With long brown hair in a ponytail and bow, she cast her dark eyes shyly downward when her mother, Nicole Sun, asked if she likes piano and if it was fun. “Yeah, fun,” Brigitte replied.

Brigitte’s father, Tao Xie of Ridgefield, Connecticut, signed her up for piano lessons on Zoom about a year ago to give her something to do during COVID-19 lockdown.

“At the beginning, I never expected that she’s going to be a prodigy or anything,” he said. “But yeah, it turns out it’s amazing.”

Brigitte was the youngest winner of the prestigious Elite International Music Competition, which earned her a spot at Carnegie Hall. She was supposed to play at Carnegie Hall as part of the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition in November 2020. That got postponed to this November and now to November 2022 due to COVID-19.

Brigitte’s mother gives credit to her piano teacher, Felicia Feng Zhang.

“Brigitte came to me when she was just two months after three years old,” her teacher said. “From the lessons, I observed she has a curious mind and she loves to learn. We call that passion.”
